Is There a Future for the Texas Film Industry?

One of the reasons I choose to live in Austin is I can make a living working in the television industry in a community that is creatively active in film, television, and videogames - but doesnt carry the same pace as Hollywood. I have always liked Austin for that reason and others do too. However, lately Ive seen how our local industry especially in film - has slowed down quite a bit. There are a lot of people that left Texas to work in Louisiana or New Mexico. And now people are talking about traveling to Michigan to work. The number one thing thats driving films to be made in those places is the states incentive package, which is significantly better than what Texas currently offers. In 2007 the Texas Motion Picture Alliance was formed to advocate before legislative, regulatory and judicial bodies, and they were able to lobby for a small incentive plan that helped a little at the time. But now that we are in a new session, TXMPA and members are hoping to convince legislators on March 4 that if Texas has more competitive incentives, we will not only bring back the entertainment industry, but we will add an additional boost to the Texas Economy. There are a number of people that are working towards a successful lobby day. The Alliance - a group of agents, casting directors, and acting coaches has spoken at many of the Austin Network mixers to educate the community about the issue at hand. A lot of actors come to Austin to get some initial experience before moving to LA ...
